VO2 Max Test

What is it:

VO2max is an assessment of how well your body can utilise oxygen during aerobic exercise. This represents the ability of your heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the skeletal muscles, and the ability of the skeletal muscles to extract the oxygen transported. Therefore the fitter you are the higher this value will be.

Why it’s important:

This form of VO2max assessment is generally considered the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness, and is often used in research for this reason. For athletes, it provides a conclusive profile of their current fitness level. However, poor levels of fitness are commonly described a causative factor of many health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and obesity. Thus, VO2max or submaximal tests are also useful for non-athletes who just like to keep fit.

Benefits:

The feedback provided after the test will allow you to see how your current fitness level matches with typical values for your age group and gender. Additionally, as we also assess your heart rate during this test, you will easily be able to apply your results to your current training, and you will be provided with information on how you can implement this data into various training methods.Β  Overall, the subject can leave the lab with an excellent idea of their current fitness level and how to use this information to improve their fitness.

Test protocol:

Prior to the test, a warm up will be completed to ensure you are ready to complete the exercise ahead. Following this, you will be fitted with a heart rate monitor and a mask, which are both linked to our breath-by-breath gas analysis system (Metalyzer 3B), allowing us to assess heart rate and O2 and CO2 concentrations of your inspired/expired air throughout the test. Subsequently the test will begin. Maximal effort is achieved over time by either gradually increasing the speed or incline of the treadmill, or increasing the resistance on the cycle ergometer every 2-3 minutes until exhaustion (or pre-determined sub-maximal level); the tester will inform you of upcoming increments during the test. Once you have hit exhaustion and subsequently recovered, one of our specialist staff will give you some basic feedback in regards to your test results. An additional feedback document will be sent to you in the days following to allow us process to analyse and the data collected.
